Hydrogen Fusion, should we persue it as an energy source? Why hasn't anyone tried to accomplish cold fusion, and why have they given up on it? I've read that it was attempted quite a few times during the cold war, and on into the 80s, then they stopped because of too many unsuccessful tries. Some scientists claimed to get at least 60% of their energy returned using only room temperature heat, so apparently the idea EXISTS, and it has the potential to be created...and with the big issue of losing oil as a natural resource, why not try it again?

What is the alternative to carbon based fuels? serious question The anti-nuke crowd won't let us build nuclear power stations. Plus the waste is arguably worse than Co2. There is not enough wind in my region for a wind farm. Solar cells are fine for calculators. Not so good for appliances that consume more than a watt of energy. What is cold fusion? Layman's terms please? I don't know what made me think of it...just sitting here being bored I guess. I thought it was a theoretical process that produced more energy than what was put into it? I looked it up on Wikipedia, but it was very technical. He3... why aren't we looking into true cold fusion? He3 reactors are in existence(on the small scale only producing a couple MW) but it is true cold fusion. I know our He3 is practically non-existent on Earth as our magnetic field deflects basically all of the incoming He3 from our sun, but He3 is abundant in other places in our solar system, like our moon. Why hasn't anyone looked into it? It can't be technology, because we have ion drives that have the capability to take us to Mars in just over a month, if they were paired with a GW nuclear reactor. I just don't understand why we are pouring money into unfeasible energy alternatives when we have great, cheap ones staring us in the face. Why was He3 swept under the rug? (yes I do have problems with hydro and wind energy, as they hurt just as much as they help. Negative Fusion? We know that we can create fusion, as demonstrated by nuclear bombs and stars. But can we create negative fusion? The fusion that we would normally think about would be considered postive fusion because it takes place at extremely hot tempatures, but can we create negative fusion, which is fusion backwards. Instead of being extremely hot negative fusion would be extreme cold past the absolute zero marker, backwards basically. Would this act like fission, or is it considered cold fusion? The tempatures involved would be around -30 Kelving Scale. Would the resulting affect cause time to go backward, and thus lead to time bombs? But is this affect even possible? They aren't having heat, they are taking away heat not just losing heat actually sucking heat out. Is an atomic explosion an over unity reaction? Are you getting more energy out than you are putting in when an atomic weapon is detonated? If so or even if not, how does this compare to the principles of cold fusion? If it is the conversion of the matter into energy then there would be no difference between both a hot fusion and a cold fusion except for the temperature at which the experiment is conducted. One would require a little more energy that the other to get the reaction started but once started there is still a hell of a lot more energy coming out than going in.

A pH of -17 concentrates protons enough to result in nuclear fusion? According to my calculations, if one were to take a box and line it with gold or iridium for corrosion resistance, and then placed a superacid inside (such as fluoroantimonic acid), the pH of the solution inside would be sufficiently low to cause the protons to align in a crystal lattice, allowing them to overcome their coulomb (electrostatic) barriers and fuse. Two protons can fuse with eachother like this to produce a neutrino and a positron, along with some heat. However, this type of 'cold' fusion obviously does not occur in practice, so what is going on? My calculations are as follows: Coulomb barrier = 2.5 femtometers (10^-15 meters); two protons that are 2.5 femtometers away will overcome their electrostatic repulsion and will succumb to the strong force, thus fusing and releasing energy. The concentration of protons in a solution is equal to 10^(-pH) moles of protons per liter of solution. 1 mole of protons = 6.022*10^23 protons. Theoretically, a solution where the protons are arranged in a cubic (crystal lattice) structure would be the most energetically favorable arrangement. In this way, each proton would have 5 adjacent proton partners in the 3 dimensional structure. In order for the protons to fuse with eachother, they would each have to be 2.5 femtometers away from each their immediate partners, thus allowing a portion of them to be past the Coulomb barrier enabling them to fuse. 1 Liter = 0.1 meters^3. Each side of a theoretical container would thus be 1 deciliter, or 0.1 meters. If the protons were 2.5*10^-15 meters away from eachother, the crystal lattice inside the box would be (0.1 meters)/(2.5*10^-15 meters) = 40 trillion (4*10^13) protons in length. The total number of protons in the container would be this length cubed, or (4*10^13)^3 = 6.4*10^40 protons in the container. Theoretically, a pure solution of 6.4*10^40 protons per liter would allow at least a partial fusion of the solution (as in, at least 2 protons would fuse together into a deuterium nucleus before the solution would lose too many protons). The number of moles of protons in the solution would be (6.4*10^40)/(6.022*10^23) = 10^17 moles of protons. 10^17 moles of protons is equivalent to a solution with a pH of -17, which can easily be created with a superacid such as fluoroantimonic acid. However, as far as my knowledge goes, no superacid can concentrate protons enough to allow fusion. Is my understanding of any of these processes wrong, or can a superacid really theoretically allow the nuclear fusion of two protons? Note: These calculations only allow for the completion of the first part of the proton-proton chain; the resulting deuterium nuclei do not necessarily fuse with other deuterium nuclei to complete the chain. The fact that two fused protons emit a positron and a neutrino along with some heat is a well stated fact; it occurs constantly in the sun, and does conserve energy. The energy mostly comes from gravity, which cause a constant force on every proton in the sun and heats them up, allowing the velocity in a proton-proton collision to be converted into heat and other particles. This is mediated in part by all 4 forces. Usually it takes a billion years for two protons to collide, but at an extreme density, each proton would exert an electrostatic force strong enough to push other protons into eachother. My question is, why don't protons that (mathematically) must cross the coulomb barrier fuse with eachother? Would the fusion of even two protons occur under the above conditions, even after a long amount of time passes by? If so, how long would it take? If not, why exactly do the protons need further momentum (or heat) in order to collide? I originally presumed the strong force to be a literal force, but is it really a force in the convential sense that an electromagnetic force is?

He has created the paper which has created the ground swell around the 911 conspiracy theories. His paper was peer reviewed but not by a civil engineering journal. One would think a serious professor would get his paper peer reviewed by a scientific journal which specializes in the field they are writing the paper on. But is Professor Jones qualified to create a paper which says the towers must have fallen due to explosives? He is a physics professor but what experience does Jones have in building collapse forensics? He has none. His other peer reviewed papers consist of cold fusion technology. He conducts research in nuclear fusion and solar energy. Nothing in his background would suggest he is qualified to write a civil engineering paper on the infinitely complex building collapse of the towers. Work, sleep and eating are the great trinity of 1997, and only the first two are guaranteed. Where will it end? It must end in a return to the days before 1800, to the days before the fossil fuels powered a vast machine industry and technology. It must end in subsistence farming and in a world population reduced by starvation, disease and violence to less than a billion. And what can we do to prevent all this now? Now? Almost nothing. If we had started 20 years ago, that might have been another matter. If we had only started 50 years ago, it would have been easy.

Where to live: Toronto, NYC, Los Angeles or Washington DC? I've lived in Seattle, NYC, Albany NY, upstate NY, etc. Finishing my Master's degree in philosophy, I want to live somewhere where I can really dig into my writing and thinking -- philosophy, psychoanalysis, cultural and political criticism, creative, screenplays, poetry. I've never been to LA, but I was really inspired by screenwriter Diablo Cody from Juno. Was it almost a disaster at LHC on 9/18/08? Can ton of helium that leaked their cause atomic fusion explosion? They lost over a ton of helium in super-cold state during operations.
